Rex-Livingston in Katoomba presents Contemporary Landscape in May 2026, featuring a suite of Katoomba's Narrowneck location by well known Sydney and Hawkesbury artist (& musician), Phil Stallard.
KATOOMBA WHITE LIMBO (The Narrowneck Suite)
"In this series I am using a Chinese Zen approach to evoke emotion in the works . These paintings are memories of the high places I have explored for many years around Katoomba.
Katoomba land forms have been the subject for many landscape artists. I have used Narrowneck (a narrow rock plateau jutting out into space ) as a subject for these works.
My Narrowneck is soaked in succulent mist, mist is the medium I have chosen from which improvised abstractions arise.
I climbed the various cliffs around Katoomba in the 70’s and 80’s and I have chosen a place I know intimately for the these works. Last year I returned to Narrowneck and just absorbed it all. Mist for me is allegorical and beautiful, the works are laden with memories of sandstone forms that I know intimately.
These works evoke a sense of space and mystery, I’m trying to imbue each work with gentleness and peace - like a haiku." Phil Stallard, March 2026.
The exhibition also includes works by gallery artists & consignment artists including; Judi Moss, Margarita Georgiadis, j.b. Moran-Dias, David R Hill, Rob Davis, Karen I. Vernon, Josh Bullen, David Asher Brook , Mona Zhang, Michael Conquest & 2026 Archibald finalist - Nick Stathopoulos.

Stathopoulos’ work crosses numerous genre boundaries. Best known for his Archibald finalist portraits (again this year with a commanding painting of film producer Margaret Fink), less known is his passion for surrealist art, especially that of Australian artist James Gleeson. This is evidenced w
