Judi Moss

Finding Light, 7 to 31 October 2022

This current series of landscapes continues the exploration and refinement of Moss's search for light, suggestion of form, and at times - severe reduction in her paintings.
Over the last several years, there has been a continued and dedicated aesthetic analysis in her work,  mainly exploring the Blue Mountains region.
Moss frequently draws en plein air, utilising watercolours, gouache and pencil. These studies provide a rich and descriptive base for her oil and wax works, allowing the essential components of the drawings to morph into evocative, often minimal paintings.

These works have an almost spiritual existence and allow for contemplation, a pause, almost a meditation.
Moss's paintings offer a sense of harmony, light, atmosphere and the seemingly incredibly simple - yet grand visions of landscape, rooted in her connection and feelings to the land itself.

Artist statement:

These works are a continuation of an ongoing love affair with the subtle nuances of the mountains and an attempt to capture their essence. They’re about merging/emerging, providing a refuge in formlessness .. entering a world with limited definition.

Working with oils, wax and often natural earth pigments, I begin with a memory of place until an inner fusion takes over and form is nudged into abstraction.

It’s like ..if you can sit in nature and surrender..  synergise with the elements to the point where you disappear and become everything.. that’s it
