JUDE ROSE & EDWARD WRAY BLISS

ARBORESCENCE, 3 to 24 December 2022, exhibition now extended until 2 Jan 2023

 JUDE ROSE

"My recent works delve deeper into the spiritual connection I have with the upper blue mountains and it’s magnificent gardens, my home now for the past 2 years. The light, the skies and the huge and diverse variety of flora and fauna continues to fascinate and overwhelm me… providing endless inspiration for my drawings on wood, linocuts, and oils on canvas.

Most of these works have been produced in my Leura studio.… a time of deep reflection and exploration, and focus on what truly matters to me, nature and creativity, self-expression, connection with land, and our ancestral heritage.

I feel very privileged to be part of this region, having always been drawn to its deep mysticism and spirituality. Since I’ve been living here, I’ve spent every day painting - enjoying long walks in suburban streets and the bush tracks around Leura, Katoomba, Blackheath and Mt Victoria. I am constantly sketching and then compiling imagery from loose drawings, allowing the artwork to take me on a journey, one area leading to another, without preconceptions, a process I find essential for the result to be from deep within, an intuitive process where I seem to become a medium in a meditative state.

I am so honoured to be exhibiting with Edward Wray-Bliss, our work compliments each other so well, and I’m a great admirer of his wonderful sculptures."

EDWARD WRAY-BLISS

"My works in this exhibition evoke something of a Japanese sensibility.  The bonsai-like metal tree forms – with their intricate curls, twists and bindings – emerge from bush-wood bases charred in the Shou Sugi Ban tradition of Japanese wood-burning.  There is a contemplative quality to these pieces, whose part organic, part metallic materiality simultaneously suggests stillness and movement."
